Roselyn Almonte

Senior School Partnerships Manager, Northeast Region

Roselyn Almonte is Senior School Partnerships Manager for CSS’s Northeast Region. In this role, she is focused on building relationships with schools across the region to support the expansion of CSS solutions. Guided by a desire to increase people’s access to various resources and opportunities, Roselyn started her career doing community health work with Johns Hopkins HealthCare in Baltimore City. She then moved on to work at StoryCorps, a media arts non-profit, where she traveled across the country recording and archiving conversations, as well as managing community partnerships for one of the organization’s key programs. Roselyn holds a master’s degree in women’s studies and gender research from the University of Florida and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of South Florida.

Abby Attias, Ph.D., is Senior Director, Curriculum & Training Design at CSS. She designs and facilitates new CSS solutions, applying the organization’s theories and practices to programmatic and training innovations. Dr. Attias supports CSS’s school-wide Student & Family Advisory program; she also develops customized projects in partnership with schools. She holds a doctorate in English from Rutgers University with an emphasis on interracial feminism and a bachelor’s degree in English from SUNY Binghamton.

Sherry Barr

Managing Director, Operations & Evaluation

Sherry Barr, Psy.D., is Managing Director, Operations & Evaluation at CSS. She oversees the implementation, dissemination, and evaluation of CSS’s peer leadership and mentoring programs. Dr. Barr is a North Carolina-licensed school psychologist. She was previously a visiting faculty member at the Center of Alcohol Studies at Rutgers University and adjunct faculty member at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University. She holds both a doctorate and master’s degree in school psychology from the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Millersville University.

Cammie Bates, MPhys, LAT, ATC, is a Program Manager in CSS’s Southern Region. She supports school administrators, faculty, and stakeholders throughout the region to successfully implement CSS solutions. Prior to joining CSS, Cammie worked as the Community Engagement Manager with Youth Thrive. In this role, she focused on connecting youth-serving organizations to increase collective impact around academic success and youth emotional well-being. Additionally, Cammie is a Personal Trainer and Wellness Coach at the YMCA. Cammie holds a master’s degree in physiology, focusing on the connection between exercise and mental health, from North Carolina State University and a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sport science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Catherine Bell is the Senior Executive Director for the Middle States Region, providing strategic vision and leadership for growth throughout the region and ensuring that CSS is providing the highest quality of service. Catherine has over fifteen years in the educational arena and has held leadership positions with The College Board, Educational Testing Service, and Innovative Schools where she was able to provide schools and districts with the tools and resources needed to provide a quality education for all students. Her passion for working with underserved students has always guided her career and volunteer efforts, and she has been a true advocate for ensuring that the needs of underserved students are met. Catherine holds a master’s in education and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of South Carolina.

Sydney Blydenburgh, MSW, is a Community School Director working with New Pathways Academy/MS 594 in New York City. Pamela Carman is a Finance Coordinator in CSS’s New Jersey office. She coordinates and supports fiscal operations at CSS, including accounting, bookkeeping, payroll and benefits, recordkeeping, and banking. Prior to joining CSS, Pam was the Business Manager at Princeton Windrows, an independent living retirement community, responsible for HR, benefits, IT, and payroll. Nadia Carofalo

Senior Director, Design & Professional Learning

Nadia Carofalo is Senior Director, Design & Professional Learning in CSS’s New Jersey office. She supports curriculum design for new and existing CSS solutions, and is a trainer as well. After graduating from Rutgers University with a bachelor’s degree in English, she became a public school teacher in one of New Jersey’s Abbott districts. Passionate about social justice and education, she spent a year teaching abroad in Honduras. After returning to the United States, she was a teacher and then an assistant principal at a school for students with learning differences in Hawaii.

National Trainer

Marlena Carreras is a National Trainer at CSS. She provides training and on-site technical assistance to school faculty and stakeholders across all regions, assisting them with the successful implementation of CSS’s solutions. Previously, Marlena served as Co-Community School Director at the Water’s Edge Campus in New York City responsible for the day-to-day management and implementation of the community school strategy in collaboration with school leadership and community partners. Her first role at CSS was as a Student Engagement Coordinator at Fordham Leadership Academy. Prior to joining CSS, Marlena was the After School Site Director at the Arts and Literacy program in Queens where she ran an arts enrichment program for middle school students. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Central Florida.

Luz Cepeda is a Community School Director working with Flushing High School (FHS) in New York City. Prior to joining CSS, Elaina was a School Social Worker with Wake County Public School System. As a trained mental health professional, Elaina provided comprehensive supports and services to address barriers impacting the social, emotional, academic, and physical needs of all students such as SEL support, crisis intervention/prevention, family support and advocacy and also served on her school’s Equity Leadership Team. Elaina holds both her master’s degree and bachelor’s degree in social work from North Carolina State University.

Erica de la Cruz

Senior Program Manager, Northeast Region

Erica de la Cruz is a Senior Program Manager in CSS’s Northeast Region. She supports school administrators, faculty, and stakeholders to successfully implement CSS solutions. Her work at CSS has been recognized by the NYC Department of Education with Certificates of Appreciation on behalf of three Brooklyn public schools. Prior to joining CSS, Erica served as the Manager of Curriculum Development and Special Projects at a NYC tutoring and publications company. Over her career, she has worked with a range of organizations including the Academic Leadership Development Academy at Minds Matter, the NYC Office of Emergency Management, and the Museum of Modern Art Archives and Library. Erica’s primary goal is dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline by supporting the implementation and development of programs that foster respect, equity, and appreciation between adults and youth, and within schools and communities. She is a Brooklyn native and has been involved in community-based projects including SUNY Downstate’s Brooklyn Healthcare Improvement Project. For fun Erica enjoys baking, cooking, working out, and watching make-up tutorials and TED Talks on YouTube. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English, and her academic interests include social theory, urban sociology, and the impact of race and class politics in education and labor.

Anissa Diaz is a Community School Associate working with Flushing High School in New York City. Jon Englebrecht

Senior Director, Strategy Implementation & Partnerships

Jon Englebrecht, M.Ed., is the Senior Director, Strategy Implementation & Partnerships at CSS. In his new role, Jon will work closely with and partner with CSS’s CEO, the Strategy Development Steering Committee, and other CSS senior leaders to advance the implementation of the organization’s strategy development and strategic planning processes and to assist in shaping and executing CSS’s strategy. Before moving into this position, Jon was a CSS National Trainer providing high quality training, on-site technical assistance, problem-solving, and coaching to school stakeholder teams and faculty, as well as supporting curriculum design and internal professional development. Prior to joining CSS, Jon served Baltimore City and DC public schools for over seven years in a variety of instructional and administrative roles, supporting AVID programs and student-mentoring initiatives, and partnered with The New Teacher Project and Urban Teachers to facilitate training in student-centered instructional practices with a whole-child approach. Jon holds a master’s degree in education from Towson University and a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics with a minor in philosophy from Stevenson University.

David Etienne

Assistant Community School Director for Water’s Edge Campus, New York City

David Etienne is an Assistant Community School Director working with Water’s Edge Campus in New York City. He is responsible for collaborating with the various stakeholders within Water’s Edge Campus, including administrators, teachers, parents, and community members, to support the creation of a supportive, engaging, and rewarding learning environment for students. Through community strategies, David strives to increase student engagement and attendance and provide students with the tools they need to become effective community members. Before joining CSS, he was a SLAM (Support, Lead, Achieve, and Model) coach for Graham-Windham Foster Care providing young people in the foster care system, as well as those at risk for entering foster care, with long-term, consistent, and comprehensive support from high school, through college or vocational school, and to a living-wage career. David holds a master’s degree in social work from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and a master’s degree in fine art from Feirstein Film of Cinema at Brooklyn College.

Anna Falkovich is a Senior Community Schools Director working across our partner community schools throughout the region. As Senior Community Schools Director, she is responsible for supporting the day-to-day management and implementation of the community school strategy in collaboration with Community School Directors, school leadership, and community partners. Prior to joining CSS, Anna pursued her graduate studies in public health, with a strong interest in school-based health education and health services. In the past, she has worked with Planned Parenthood Federation of America on direct marketing and direct response fundraising. Anna holds a master of public health degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a bachelor’s degree in public health, international development, and gender studies from Boston University.

Anna V. Frank-Zubova is Development Coordinator at CSS. In her role, Anna supports CSS’s fundraising strategies to increase individual and institutional giving and provides support to the CSS Board of Trustees. She came to CSS from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, where she held a number of administrative roles and gained experience in nonprofit administration, event planning, and program support. Anna received her bachelor’s degree in European studies from Rutgers College and holds a certificate in meeting, event, and conference planning and management from New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies.

Tawanda Futrell-Taylor is an Accountant at CSS. She works closely with the Director of Finance and the Accounting Supervisor to support CSS’s fiscal operations. Tawanda comes to CSS with over 12 years of experience in both non-profit and public accounting. Most recently she worked for CFO Strategies as an Assistant Controller where she performed outsourced accounting services for multiple companies. She has worked for both small and large companies during her career, including a non-profit organization based in her home town of Jersey City and The American Red Cross. Tawanda holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from New Jersey City University.

Cynthia Graham

Executive Director, Northeast Region

Cynthia Graham is Executive Director for CSS’s Northeast Region, providing strategic vision and leadership for growth throughout the region and ensuring that CSS is providing the highest quality of service. She also facilitates at CSS’s trainings across all regions. Cynthia has 15 years of experience in youth development, nonprofit leadership, and field support. Her most recent role before joining CSS was Chief Program Officer for Friends of the Children NY, a Harlem and South Bronx based organization committed to providing professional mentoring services to the most vulnerable youth in NYC. Previous roles include Executive Director for New York’s Children of Promise (a statewide collaborative of Big Brothers Big Sisters to provide mentoring for children of prisoners), Director of Innovation for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and Director of Program Services for Mass Mentoring Partnership. Gerald Guillaume is a Community School Director working with Henry Snyder High School in Jersey City, NJ. Antonia Johnson

Managing Director, Learning & Design

Antonia Johnson, Ed.D., is Managing Director, Learning & Design at CSS. She oversees the design and delivery of high quality, innovative initiatives for the field of Education and Youth Development, as well as for our own organizational growth. As a key member of our senior leadership team, she works alongside the team to support the strategy and direction for CSS growth and set an overall CSS learning strategy. Prior to joining CSS, Dr. Johnson served for over 20 years as an educational leader and equity advocate on the school, district, and state level. She served as an English teacher, school administrator, Executive Director of Elementary Education, and Director of Professional Development. As a Director of Professional Development with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, Antonia led the design and delivery of the learning strategy for K-12 and higher education professionals across a statewide network of early college high schools. Most recently, she served as Director of District Partnerships with a national non-profit to advance an equitable education for all students through culturally relevant curricula. Dr. Johnson also supported the design and facilitation of a District Leadership Cohort where she provided leadership to school and district leaders deepening their knowledge of continuous improvement for equity. Joyce Loveless

Senior Executive Director, Southern Region

Joyce Loveless is Senior Executive Director for the Southern Region, leading the organization’s expansion efforts throughout the region to increase the number of students benefitting from CSS solutions. Before joining CSS, she was Senior Director for Schools Services for NC New Schools/Breakthrough Learning and the NC State Director for Early College High Schools. In these roles, Joyce designed, developed, and supported over 180 innovative schools focused on transforming classrooms into student-centered, personalized learning environments that align with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for success in careers and higher education. She has also served as Executive Director for Access and Equity for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and is a National Board Certified Teacher herself who has taught elementary and middle school students in Virginia and North Carolina. Joyce holds a master’s degree in adult education from North Carolina State University and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Virginia Tech.

Jonathan D. Mathis

Chief Executive Officer

Jonathan D. Mathis, PhD, is CSS’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He comes to CSS with vast expertise in cultivating transformational experiences across primary, secondary, and postsecondary educational institutions and nonprofit organizations. Jonathan’s focus for the past 20 years has been on the success of learners, teachers, and leaders across all levels of education. His contributions to the field of Education include emphasis on educational equity and systems change; college access and success; social, emotional, and academic development; academic achievement and postsecondary readiness; training and professional development; as well as student, counselor, and school principal leadership development resources and experiences. Prior to being selected as CSS’s CEO, Jonathan was Senior Vice President, Education Policy and Systems Change for City Year, Inc.; Executive Director at Next Step Public Charter School; Director of National Honor Societies at the National Association for Secondary School Principals (NASSP); Director of Education and Training for the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC); Regional Director, Collegiate Identity Partnership Model for Partnerships to Uplift Communities (PUC) Schools; and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California, Rossier School of Education. He has also provided board and national advisory service for educational institutions and nonprofits, including the American University Alumni Association, College Board’s Counselor Community Advisory Group, and the New Futures organization. Through all of his academic and professional experiences, Jonathan has demonstrated his unwavering commitment to the mission of CSS—to help schools become places where students want to be. Wanda Mitchell is a Student Engagement Coordinator working with the William H. Taft Educational Campus in New York City. Sharon Rose Powell

Founder

Sharon Rose Powell, Ed.D., is the Founder of CSS. An educator and leadership training consultant for over 30 years, Dr. Powell has developed numerous peer leadership models, beginning with the comprehensive Peer Group Connection program in 1979. She is a frequent presenter at public forums that focus on teacher professional development initiatives, leadership training, and the developmental issues of adolescents during critical transitions in their lives. Dr. Powell is currently in a private practice as a licensed psychologist for adolescents, couples and families in the Princeton area. She holds a doctorate in counseling psychology from the Graduate School of Education (GSE) at Rutgers University; a master’s degree from the GSE at the University of California, Berkeley; and a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Agnes Preston

System Administrator

Agnes “Agi” Preston is a System Administrator with CSS. She serves as the main point of contact for the maintenance of CSS’s technological systems, ensuring that CSS employees have the support needed in the day-to-day use of technology, and troubleshoots any issues that may arise. Prior to CSS, Agi worked as System Administrator for Rawle & Henderson LLP, a Center City Philadelphia law firm. With over two decades of experience in the IT field, she also worked for the Wilson School District (Reading, PA) and for the Brandywine Area School District (Topton, PA). She received her master’s degree in art and geography from Eszterhazy Karoly Teacher’s University in Eger, Hungary and is a CompTIA A+ Certified Computer Technician.

Sulamit Quezada is a Curriculum Operations Manager for CSS’s National Team. She will develop and oversee improved systems for cataloguing, storing, translating, formatting, and producing CSS’s curricular and training designs/materials for both internal and external users. Nkese Rankine is a Senior Community Schools Director working across our partner community schools throughout the region. After serving as Senior School Support Manager for 4 years, Melissa Reagan is now Director, Curriculum & Training Operations at CSS. In her new role, she oversees the work of the national training operations team, assesses and meets the training needs of school partners, and provides logistical leadership and oversight for training and curriculum operations across CSS’s core program solutions. When Melissa first joined CSS, she focused on technical assistance, veteran school support and sustainability, and training logistics for CSS’s North Carolina region. Melissa holds a master’s degree in public administration with a focus on nonprofit management from North Carolina State University and a bachelor’s degree in international affairs from The George Washington University.

Katie Robinson has returned to CSS in the role of National Trainer. In this role, she provides training and on-site technical assistance to school faculty and stakeholders across all regions, assisting them with the successful implementation of CSS’s solutions. Previously, Katie served as a Program Manager in the New York City region supporting school administrators, faculty, and stakeholders. Prior to joining CSS, Katie was the Dean of Students at Leadership Prep Brownsville Middle Academy. She received a master’s degree in the sociology of education from New York University, a master’s degree in elementary education from the University of Missouri, and a bachelor’s degree in sociology and women’s studies from Loyola University Chicago.
